The the department of San Martin's territory is characterized by its diversity. The western side, limits with the Eastern edge of the Andean plateau and presents a rough relief. It also has ample valleys and the continuation of the Blue Mountain Range, with little elevation. Finally, a small zone of low forest with flooding areas and little geographic accidents.

- Lima - Chiclayo - Olmos - Bagua - Moyobamba - Tarapoto: 1445km by the North Highway and the Marginal Highway of the Forest (aprox. 24 hours of trip by car).
- Lima - Huánuco - Tingo María - Tocache - Tarapoto: 1020km bye the Central Highway and then the Marginal Highway of the Forest (aprox 20 hours by car).

- There are regular flights from Lima to the city of Tarapoto.
